So, Dave and I need to eat heathier, but what to do. Step one, go on the internet and find out what that means and how to do it. Encounter first problem, too much information. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that there’s a lot of information available on the subject, it’s just that I for one don’t enjoy having to comb through it all. Food isn’t my favorite subject, to me, it’s just food. I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about food. I think about it for the 10 seconds it takes to order something at the drive thru, or the tiny bit of time it takes me to pick out frozen meals from the grocery case, and the even smaller amount of time it takes for me to pull the box meal out of the freezer (it’s probably the one that’s on the top.) It’s just food, I don’t really think about it. Even when we order delivery, it’s “what do you want?” “I don’t care, whatever you want”. It takes a while because Dave doesn’t really give much thought to it either. I always joke that my favorite food is the food that magically appears in front of me.
Sure there are foods that I don’t like (yuck liver and onions) but for the most part I just don’t care much. So the thought of spending hours figuring out what’s “healthy”. What foods to eat, what not to eat, what ingredients are needed, going shopping for them, and how to cook them is downright depressing. I’ve already spent hours on the internet looking at information about “healthy eating” and scouring through recipes. Low calorie, low fat, low carbohydrate, low whatever the hell, it just makes my head spin. I want to just say forget it and move on to doing something more fun or relaxing with my free time.
Then it occurs to me that I can’t possibly be the only one going through this. I can’t be the only one who works over forty hours a week, leads a busy life, and doesn’t want to spend what little time I have left in my day thinking about, researching, and cooking food. So with that in mind, I decide that since I have to go through all of this, I might as well share what I find in hopes that it may save someone else the frustration and aggravation of doing this themselves.
As I’m sure you have gathered, I am not by any means an “expert” in nutrition or healthy anything. Dave and I are just your average folks who need to try to eat healthier. Neither one of us wants to go on a “diet”, been there done that. We agree that we also don’t want to attempt some crazy total lifestyle change. Some may think I’m lazy, but I don’t think it’s lazy not to think a lot about, or obsess over food. If you have time for that, great, but I don’t. We’re not looking for, or expecting miracles of weight loss. We aren’t hoping to be on the cover of a healthy living magazine. We are just attempting to take small steps toward eating more healthy foods while not disrupting our lives.
We just want to TRY to eat more healthy meals more often. That’s it, that’s all.
